Check out the madness that was the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain recently held in Nairobi, Kenya!

According to the Capital FM Lifestyle folks, the ghost of Kanye West did not stay out of the African version of the MTV Music Awards this past Saturday, and this time it was Akon who grabbed the mic and shoved it in his briefs! [uuummm, why?]

And even with that stunt, Akon still did not get any more love than when the show started [just so you know, Akon has stood Kenya up a couple of times and so some fans are still a bit bitter].

The two were clowning at the award show and how did it get started? Well for one, Wyclef challenged Akon to do 20 push-ups on stage. This then became flips on the stage, and then there was the shirt removing exercise before it degenerated into both mega -stars dropping down their pants [seriously, who does?].

While Wyclef kept his black briefs on, Akon went on to slip the microphone in his white briefs, and then quickly whipped it out. It didn’t look right. They have hot bodies though.

Apart from that and a few gaps of silence here and there, the event went on without any glitches.

Though Akon was slated to be the show stopper and had his name blared on all the pre-award press conferences, Wyclef carried the night with his amazing energy and unpredictable antics.

From driving a mini quad bike on the red carpet, to playing the guitar on his back and with his teeth, to ripping the bongo drums, to somersaulting into the crowd and belting out several tunes; Wyclef charged the audience to a frenzy.

Fun times in Kenya!

2009 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) with Zain rock in Nairobi, Kenya!

Nairobi, Kenya was certainly the place to be this weekend!

Superstar celebrities, socialites, African glitterati & music fans from all over Africa were in Nairobi this past weekend to celebrate at the 2009 MTV African Music Awards with Zain. MTV Networks International’s chairman and chief executive Bill Roedy said that the MTV African Music Awards with Zain are a “celebration of African music and African culture.”

Held at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kenya, the award show was hosted by Wyclef Jean…from the picture below, the award show looked like it was BANANAS (no pun intended!!)

And the winners of the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards are…

HHP (South Africa) won Best Music Video (for Mpitse)

2Face (Nigeria) won Best R&B

MI (Nigeria) won Best New Act & Best Hip Hop

Zebra & Giraffe (South Africa) won Best Alternative

Nameless (Kenya) won Best Male

Amani (Kenya) won Best Female

Samini (Ghana) won Best Performer

P-Square (Nigeria) won Best Group

D’Banj (Nigeria) won Artist of the year

Unlike the 2008 MAMAs, which featured Kelly Rowland, the Game and Flo Rider, Wyclef Jean and Senegalese-born U.S. super-star Akon were the only international performers at the MTV award show. And apparently both of the mega-stars made a point of emphasizing their African connections.

There were also a series of collaborative performances – South Africans HHP, Zebra & Giraffe, neo-soul singer Lira and hip-hop star, Da LES; Kenyans Amani, Wahu and Nameless, and Nigeria’s R&B singer, 2Face.

Highlights also included a tribute to MAMA legend award winner, South Africa’s reggae star Lucky Dube who was murdered in 2007.

Our peeps at Capital FM Lifesyle who attended the award show tell us that Akon’s baby mama Susan Owori from Uganda was not the main feature for the Senegalese singer during his visit to Kenya. Susan was a no-show at the concert, but supposedly Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Badara Akon Thiam , managed to meet up with another gorgeous Kenyan girl…

Susan Owori is the younger sister of Kampala socialite, fashion designer and magazine publisher, Sylvia Awori, who is carving out her niche in Nairobi & Kampala.

Kenya and Nigeria were the big winners, bagging eight awards, three of which went Kenya and five to Nigeria.

Wyclef Jean to host the 2009 MTV African Music Awards with Zain in Nairobi, Kenya

Hip hop icon & humanitarian, Wyclef Jean will host the 2nd annual MTV African Music Awards with Zain (MAMA’s) in Nairobi, Kenya on October 10, 2009 at the Indoor Arena of the Moi International Sports Complex. Last year the first MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain were held in Abuja, Nigeria.

We think MTV picked the right one because Wyclef rocked the house this weekend in Orlando, FL at the Black Enterprise Golf and Tennis Challenge…fun times!
