Spring is in the air!!! Well at least in South Africa & this year’s premier fashion week, Cape Town Fashion Week, will showcase the hottest Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collections at the Cape Town International Convention Center (CTICC), in a fun & sexy theme aptly named “Refresh, Revive, Renew”…… ♥ it already!!!

True to its reputation as a cosmopolitan city that’s bursting with edgy creativity and experimental daring, Cape Town will once again take the lead in revealing the latest design trends that are destined to take Summer by storm.

Audiences will be presented collections by some of the country’s best-known designers, including ready-to-wear heavyweights Klûk CGDT, Stefania Morland and Craig Port, who will be introducing his women’s wear range. Craig Native makes a much anticipated return to the runway after an absence of a few years and Durban based Ruff Tung make their Cape Town debut.

Swimwear supremo Dax Martin, who recently returned from Las Palmas in Spain, where he was one of only 11 international designers invited to show his most recent collection, will also be vamping up the ramp with his new beachwear creations.

But Cape Town Fashion Week is not only about giving a platform to the big names – it’s committed to showcasing the country’s most innovative up-and-coming design talent as well. Catch emerging designers such as Good Clothing and Coppelia in their debut shows, as well as conceptual designers David West, known for his fun, quirky pieces, and Suzaan Heyns, who is making a name for herself with her avant-garde aesthetic.

Brilliant news is that major clothing chains Foschini and Woolworths have thrown their weight behind the brightest design students from fashion schools to present a graduate collection as well as a mixture of up and coming and familiar designers with emerging talent collections. Both retailers are partnering with the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC) who has partnered and worked with African Fashion International (AFI) to manage production and marketing of these shows.

Foschini is also previewing the Stoned Cherrie Love Movement range at AFI Cape Town Fashion Week which, says the brand’s Nkhensani Nkosi, was inspired by global icons and peace lovers the world over.

African Fashion International (AFI) Cape Town Fashion Week runs at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 11th – 14th August 2010. So excited to be a part of this!

So our South African Correspondent, Allegro ran our GIVEAWAY for tickets to the MATAANO fashion show during the 2010 Africa Fashion Week taking placing at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg, South Africa! Though I was nervous at first, because this is our first “international” (depends on how you look at it, really) giveaway, Allegro did a FAB job on FACEBOOK & TWITTER on running the giveaway…

So I got an email to interview the fab duo that makes up MATAANO! Idyl & Ayaan Mohamill, twin sisters from Somalia but based in New York City make up the design team behind MATAANO. I was traveling to New York City anyway to host the 2010 Lovers Ball featurinG DJ Xclusive from London, U.K. and BankyW, one of the hottest Nigerian R&B singers!

So when I landed in New York City, I called up the girls to set up an interview time with them. I was super excited but super nervous because they have had great reviews in the media including being on the Oprah Winfrey show, CNN did an amazing interview and profile on them, Essence Magazine just fell in love with their clothing line. We set up a breakfast meeting for the following day to do the interview! Finally I was going to actually meet them…Yayee!!!

Later on that evening, I headed out to one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn, Madiba’s to dine with friends that were visiting the U.S.A…we were seated outside and this beautiful young woman walks past our table. My mouth opened “Idyl Mohamill?“. She turned and said “Yes…” O.M.G!!!!

The next day I met up with Idyl & Ayaan in Manhattan for breakfast. Honestly, when you meet them for the first time, you cannot help but fall in love with them. They are beautiful, intelligent, fabolous, young and very African but in a chic kinda way!!! They were preparing to show for the first time at the 2010 Africa Fashion Week, (June 30th – July 3rd) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

And in some “fabulosity news” , reality-show star, Kimora Lee & “hubby” Djimon Hounsou made an appearance at the grand opening of her new Baby Phat store in Canal Walk, Cape Town. She hosted a cocktail event and had a meet & greet with some of her fans…

Kimora Lee has another store in Johannesburg’s Clearwater Mall and is to open a third in Rosebank. The couple is in South Africa along with daughters Ming Lee, 10, and Aoki Lee, 7, and son Kenzo, 1.

The Costume Institute Gala Benefit (better known as the MET Gala) — which, this year, is celebrating the opening of the “American Women: Fashioning a National Identity” exhibition — was held this past Monday in New York City’s The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The ridiculously glamorous benefit always draws the “creme de la creme” of the glitterati with some of the most intriguing red carpet fabness of the year.

Co-hosted by Oprah Winfrey, who was resplendent in custom Oscar de la Renta navy silk organza embroidered gown, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour and Gap Executive Vice President of Global Design, Patrick Robinson, the 2010 Met Gala invitees celebrated American style in high fashion….

So the blogsphere is abuzz with First Lady Michelle Obama’s tres chic red gown that she wore at the 2010 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner this past Saturday.

She wore  a hand-draped, off the shoulder, bright red matte jersey gown by Prabal Gurung. Check the fabness that is our first lady…

♥ that she continues to support young designers! For accessories, she wore an an assortment of Bochic jewels, including a pair of carved tourmaline earrings…

…white bakelite cuff (top cuff), constructed from white bakelite, gold filigree and rose-cut diamonds. Price tag for this cuff is U.S.$17,500!

She also wore a Bochic tourmaline & diamond ring (I think to balance the look she was sans her wedding ring)…

And finally she wore a gold cuff (bottom cuff) by Sutra Jewels, created from 10 carats of raspberry tourmaline, flanked by rose cut diamonds in a star-burst motif…

The Mo’Nique show was about fun & fashion and what better way than to have fashion’s two uber fab model Eva Marcille & the viewers’ fave designer, Korto Momolu!

Even though Eva chatted about her experience and win on America’s Next Top Model, I was kinda hoping that she would shed some insight on the reason behind her calling off her engagement to actor & cutie Lance Gross…I mean the people wanna know what happened to the cute couple?!?!?

I heart & adore Korto for the simple reason that she is super talented, so African and very relatable! I think those are some of the reasons why she has been one of the most popular designers of Project Runway and really why she is one of the most exciting up & coming designers!

Meanwhile in Chicago, Oprah had Mo’Nique’s brother Gerald Imes and parents, Mr. & Mrs. Imes (along with their other son Steven) on her show. Gerald admitted to sexually molesting Mo’Nique when she was just 7-years old.

* Mo’Nique did not want to be a part of her brother’s interview, but she gave Oprah her blessing...

Gerald said on the show:

“I’m here today to first acknowledge that I’ve been in denial for 37 years. … I did assault and inappropriately touch my sister in manners that were uncomfortable for her…And for that, I apologize and I’m humbly sorry that those actions had taken place.”

“The drugs weren’t an excuse. They just allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to do the things that were in the back of my mind as a kid that I always wanted to do…Most of the time, the abuse that I did with my sister took place while she was asleep [or] the appearance that she was asleep.

“I hid my own molestation and pain and guilt and shame, because I thought it was my fault that these things happened to me…So I internalized that, and I hid behind the drugs and alcohol and then that spiraling thing in my mind, as a child, I wanted to express my sexuality, so I took it out on my sister.”

“The hardest part for me was even to admit to her I did something wrong…I downplayed it by saying, ‘If you think I did it … .’ There’s no more ‘if you think’ — I did it. I did it. I’m not proud of it. Mo’Nique, I’m sorry. I can only hope that by coming forth today that somewhere along the line with the apology that, yes, hopefully somewhere, somehow as siblings we can come back together.

“I’m doing this to apologize to my sister, to hopefully bring back some family unity…I’m doing this to publicly acknowledge. Now let’s bring our family back together.”

Gerald, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for molesting another person, said he also apologized to the other victim. As for Mo’Nique publicly addressing the abuse, he said, “I’m proud that she was able to finally get to a place that she could relinquish her pain. When she made the comment that I was the individual contributing to her role, I had to look at her and say, ‘I really understand her pain.’ ”

Wow! My heart & prayers go out to Mo’Nique and her family as they go through their healing and restoration! Please leave your comments below…

An interesting collection came from Sylvester Falata, the models were hot but the fact that it got a standing ovation already tells you that he surprised a lot of people. The line, most noticeably inspired by Lady Gaga’s wardrobe, was taken to the next level of sophistication with a touch of “I know I’m rocking this look” attitude.

All kinds of YUMMY this!!

Surprise models included South African singing sensation Lira, on for Sylvester Falata in a gorgeous silver-grey gown with a huge red flower on one shoulder.
