Zimbabwe’s All Female A’cappella Ensemble, off to Canada



Nobuntu a “Five Part” A’cappella Vocal ensemble made up of young women from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe will be off to Canada in 2 weeks’ time for their first international tour in 2016. Nobuntu which was formed in 2011 is made up of Joyline Sibanda, Zanele Manhenga, Thandeka Moyo, Heather Dube and Duduzile Sibanda. NOBUNTU @ Brussels on November 28, 2014The ensemble, which recently launched their second album entitled EKHAYA on online stores, will sample their new tracks to their Canadian fans, before coming back home and embarking on a National Album Launch in Bulawayo, Harare and Victoria Falls from May till June.

We have mainly toured in Europe and this North American Tour is really something we are excited about. It is always nerve wrecking to perform for a totally new audience and also push your music to them”, Zanele Manhenga (Member of Nobuntu)

The name Nobuntu is an African concept that values humbleness, love, purpose, unity and family from a woman’s perspective. Their repertoire is a fusion of traditional Zimbabwean rooted music, Afro Jazz, Gospel and Crossover in pure voices with minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as Mbira and some dance movements.

NOBUNTU @ Brussels on November 28, 2014The ensemble was nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards 2015, which were held in London, United Kingdom. The video of NARINI their lead single from the second album, EKHAYA, went on to being Number 1 on the Top 10 Zimbabwean Music Video on DSTV’s Zambezi Magic TV.

This year, our team has planned a lot of activities which will see us perform more in Zimbabwe and across the globe. We are looking forward to representing Zimbabwean Music in Canada and showing how much of a solid people we are”, Thandeka Moyo (Member of Nobuntu)

Prior to their Canada tour, the ensemble has released 2 singles from their 2nd album, EKHAYA, with Narini receiving a lot of airplay on local radio stations. The other single, Woza Ngane addresses women abuse and how women can stand for each other to eradicate this social problem.
