Hello loves! It has been foreveeeeeeer!
Truthfully, Forbes (US) and Forbes Africa has been keeping me super busy (but I ain’t complaining *smiley emoji* ) – and also I have been taking some time to research and figure out the direction I would like to take FaraiToday – I am deeply passionate about celebrating Africa – so you definitely will be hearing more from me on this.
In the meantime, I flew out to Los Angeles, California for the 2014 BET Awards – my first time attending – and what an experience! As a matter of fact, for the first time this year, the BET Awards were expanded to a 3-day musical extravaganza called the BET Experience.
My BET Awards credentials
For me, the BET Experience kicked off immediately after checking into my hotel, downtown L.A, close to the Staples Center & the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE, where all the action was going to be taking place. After checking in and picking up my credentials (which were nice as you can see from the above picture), I had a chance to chat with South African mega duo, Mafikizolo and stylist and make-up guru, Nthato Mashishi – check them out on the upcoming cover / coverstory for ForbesWoman Africa.
Then it was off to the BET Awards reception for International nominees on the rooftop of the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton. On the 1’s and 2’s, was African female DJ, Supermodel who rocked the night! Her set was something out of this world!
I loved how BET had all the international nominees stars on the faux Hollywood Walk of Fame….
Then after partying up a storm with Ice Prince, Sarkodie, Tiwa Savage, Mafikizolo, Fally Ipupa, Davido, first concert was Maxwell and Jill Scott, live in action – and they did not disappoint. I sang along so loud, that my voice got raspy…*in that Rick Ross type of way*…
Next day, was a full day at the BET Experience – talking to attendants, fans, celebs, and taking in the experience. Then checked out the African artists’ performances – they wowed the crowd – from Ice Prince (2013 BET Award winner for the International Act – Africa category), Mafikizolo (they had a slight hiccup with sound in the beginning but they kept going) and Tiwa Savage – I was doubly proud.
I caught up with all the artists after their performances. Check out my BlackTree TV interview with Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage (ok, excuse my bra sticking out of my dress – it was a working day for me – I did not think I would end up in front of the camera *smiley face*)
So much fun!
Tiwa Savage & I at the BET private reception for international artists
Saturday concert had to me my favorite; Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Asap Rocky and Outkast – I had NO voice after.
Sunday was the award show – danced hard to Lionel Richie and of course Troop, Color Me Badd and Silk *I just aged myself hehehe* and then finished off with concert featuring Jennifer Hudson, Trey Songz *I blew him a kiss and he caught it from stage and he waved back at me…seriously* – Trey Songz brought out Chris Brown, August Alsina, and then the Queen herself, Mary J Blige closed out the concert and BET Experience.
