A cold front has been threatening Jozi for the past week, but this past Saturday the 8thof June Jozi’s urban-hub – the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein was finally confronted by it with the final instalment of Castle Lite’s Extra Cold Live. The popular Saturday hang-out was transformed into an ICE music and Hip Hop village.
“Dope party! Fun times! #ExtraColdLive†remarked @iam_PH, one of the guests on twitter who attended the event.
This first-of-its-kind campaign sent Mzansi into a frenzy when fans from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg were given the power to create their own concert line-up of 7 acts selected from 25 of SA’s leading musicians. Following the success of Cape Town and Durban’s events, Jozi’schosen line-up and festivities finished the campaign in style as the urban street culture hub offered guests non-stop entertainment including break dancers, food and clothing stores.
One of South Africa’s original graffiti artists Goggatransformed his ‘canvas’ into a remarkable piece of art, whilst ice sculptors kept guests amazed with their precision skills. Live performances from Hip Hop ciphers, namely rap heavy weights Anti B, Power Of Thought, Slyme and Corvinegathered crowds and built momentum towards the main line-up of the day.
One of South Africa’s undisputed kings of Hip Hop – AKA locked it down as MC, and kept guests including Trevor Gumbi, Poppy Ntshongwana and Anele Mdoda thoroughly entertained. The explosive line-up chosen by the city of Jozi celebrated some of the country’s best artists and included unbelievable performances from Siya Shezi, F.Eu DJs, Pascal & Pearce, Jack Parrow, Tuks, Khuli Chana, Zakes Bantwini and once-off collaborations between Kwesta& Ill Skillz, as well as Lulo Café & DJ Zinhle. Surprise collaborations with Nothende and Lulo Cafe as well as Busiswa with DJ Zinhle blew the crowd away.
Fans couldn’t contain their excitement about the line-up on the night – #ExtraColdLive was the business yesterday! Juta Str was on fireâ€, remarked @mizerwesi on twitter.
“Extra Cold Live was all about giving our consumers the opportunity to create their own concert, by selecting the artists they want to see. The outcome of all three of the events has resulted in truly ICE experiences that have showcased the best of South African music.†remarked by Andrea Quaye, General Manager for Castle Lite.
