Idris Elba’s Nelson Mandela Biopic To Start Shooting This May + Gets Backing From Pathe International!

Filed under : Africa, Movie Review

And I love Idris Elba. I really do. But….

Can we NOT find an African actor [born & raised on the continent] to play Tata Madiba‘s role? Or an African actress for that matter to play Mama Winnie Madikizela Mandela? For once. Please. Terrence Howard & Jennifer Hudson both had a shot at it.

The new biopic, officially announced a few weeks ago, has a May 26th 2012 production start date.  The director, Justin Chadwick will use a script based on Long Walk to Freedom – the autobiographical work written by Tata Nelson Mandela himself, which highlights his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison.

British actress, Naomie Harris is said to be “in talks” to star as Winnie Mandela opposite Idris Elba in this project.

Idris’s project got a boost with Pathe International having reportedly come on board to financially back the biopic (along with South Africa-based) Distant Horizon, which they are desribing as:

the largest South African production ever mounted!

*deep sigh*
