FORBESAFRICA Person Of The Year 2011 Award Goes To….

Last night in Lagos, Nigeria, FORBES AFRICA unveiled the Person of the Year for 2011. I was every bit surprised of who the recipient was….

I was certain that the late, great Dr. Wangari Maathai would win the award. The last time I checked, she was leading with the online votes. If not her, I thought, President of Liberia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. After 2011 belonged to her. She won the 2011 Noble Peace Prize Award (along with Leymah Gbowee – an activist also from Liberia & Tawakul Karman from Yemen)! And if not President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf then Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest individual….

The online voting was 25% of the overall scoring criteria….

The finalists included Madame Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia; Pedro Veron Pires,  former president of Cape Verde & winner of the 2011 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership; Aliko Dangote, and the late Professor Wangari Mathaai…and the winner….

*Drum roll please*….

Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was for the second consecutive year named Central Bank Governor of the Year in Sub-Saharan Africa by global business magazine, Emerging Market. In his acceptance speech, Sanusi said:

“To be short-listed along with four great Africans for Person of the Year is one of the greatest honours imaginable. And to have been selected winner from that group is simply beyond dreams.”

As the Forbes Africa Person of the Year he will appear on the cover of the December issue of Forbes Africa magazine where readers will also get more insight into his life as Africa’s most influential leader.

The awards ceremony, which was organised by ABN Productions, was held at the Sky Restaurant, Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria with the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola delivering a key note address. The event was attended by other captains of industry and dignitaries from across the continent including the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi.

Congratulations!
