New York Fashion Week: Korto Momolu & Mataano Twins!! Part One

From Guest Fashion Contributor, Demi Ajayi comes this….

What a whirlwind of a night!  I just got my first taste of the bi-annual frenzy that is New York Fashion Week  (NYFW).

Word on the street Sunday was that two FaraiToday designer faves, Mataano and Korto Molomu were showing at  the “Designers Show-case 2012” (Sponsored by Iman Cosmetics) in Time Warner Center for New York Fashion Week, and we HAD to be there for the action.  All this being a whopping 2 hours to showtime, mind you, without a prior RSVP!

Korto Momolu & the Mataano twins

Needless to say, we were on our Amazing Race meets Project Runway steez, with me trying to get there, and Farai making sure I could get in.  Several texts/phone convos with Korto’s publicist and one speedy cab ride to Columbus Circle  later, we were all set for the big show.

Many thanks to the event managers and Korto‘s publicist who were so hospitable to our request, because if you know Fashion Week, you know how THAT can be.

The showcase was held at the beautiful Samsung Experience against a modern white backdrop perfect for these vibrant Spring/Summer collections.

Born in the United States but raised in Somalia, identical twins Idyl and Ayaan Mohallim then fled back to the U.S due to Somalia’s civil war. After attending college at University of Michigan and  Boston University  respectfully, they moved to New York and took the bold step to pursue fashion.

The Mataano girls received early attention from Oprah, Mama Media Mogul herself on her “Young Millionaire Mogul” show and also a CNN international special.

These designers have also come full circle with their first journey back to Africa since their exile. The Mohallim twins, premiered at African Fashion Week in South Africa in 2010 and in Ethiopia.

Up first to showcase their Spring/Summer 2012 collection was Mataano . Their collection was a playful and poised look accentuated by bold floral prints and belly-baring separates.

Take a look:

The red dress was definitely my favorite! With the flirty peach ruffled dress a close second; sigh, summer come back!

Matte Iman red lipstick, Golden Romance eye shadow from the Eye-Con Kit  select necklaces and loosely swept hair completed the models’ look.

What was your favorite Mataano look?
