Last night I attended one of the best parties this year! The YFM Youth Day celebration that was held at the Bus Factory in Newtown was too nice, exactly what the young people needed in celebration of Youth Day. I had so much fun that for once in my life I left a party when it was over!!!

The VIP lounge:

Truth be told YFM and company knows how to treat a VIP crowd. The lounge was a great space to mingle, eat and drink while observing the happenings of the night. I left home hungry and was glad that when I got to the VIP lounge there was food…glorious food. Trust me they went all out to cater for everyone’s tastebuds. I loved how they stuck to the theme even when it came to the food. There were assorted dishes from pap and wors, kota, chips, amagwinya etc (you get the idea). The bar was open and the drinks kept flowing, everyone in there was really well taken care of…anyway enough about the food!

The music + performances:

The music was also kept very local, reminding the youth of their own sound. Classics, from Brenda Fassie, Arthur Mafokate and many more took us back in time. I also loved the whole idea of having Youth Day 1976 clips/images played on the screens inside the venue, for some it could  have been the first time they witnessed those visuals. Nothende, Relo and Lucia Mthiyane collaborated on stage also joined by Tumi from the Volume (I love Tumi’s stage presence). Stoan and Speedy also took to the stage and the crowd loved them…so did I. Cool kid on the block Kwesta did his thing on stage repping for the Strussbob fashion show and did best. My favourite was Professor, who was joined on stage to perform his hit and my favourite track from his album, “Lento”. The DJ’s also went hard on the decks and I think people went almost insane when YFM Breakfast DJ and Club 808 presenter Mo Flava took to the decks, he was the last DJ on the night and it was a good thing people were still there in their numbers.

The fashion show:

We all know young people love fashion and hence YFM incorporated music and fashion to host a great party. As far as I know, the fashion show worked as follows: each designer dressed a different YFM DJ for a different era e.g GJC dressed YFM’s afternoon drive show DJ Dineo Ranaka representing the 2000 era. Uyanda Mbuli’s DFC dressed the YFM twins Hlelo and Ntando who both represented the 90s era.

I was there with my friends make-up artist Mina Shembe, Designer Sandi Mabasa, blogger Lebogang Mgiba and bumped into so many others, we just turned into a huge bunch of crazy familiar faces. I spotted so many people, I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Just out of curiosity, what part of Africa are you guys from? Was the party location in Africa or abroad? Looking at the pictures, taken 6/15/11, what part of African weather requires wearing winter jacket in June? Or was the location in Europe? Just curious! Am a Nigerian residing in CA, U.S.A.
