In Football: Egypt vs Bafana

I wasn’t too happy with this game but I guess a draw is better than losing away to Egypt. South Africa managed to grab a point and send Egypt all the way to the bottom of Group G with only 2 points and thus failing to qualify for the African Nations Cup. The Bafana team was led by vice captain Siphiwe Tshabalala after captain Steven Pienaar sustained a knee injury in camp.

“Siphiwe Tshabalala captained Bafana Bafana to a well-earned 0-0 draw in their 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Egypt at the Military Academy Stadium in Egypt on Sunday.

The draw places Bafana on top of the group with eight points after four matches, requiring one win in the remaining two fixtures to ensure qualification into the Africa Cup of Nations.

They will play Niger away in September and host Sierra Leone in October.”

In other news…Egypt were’nt too happy with their performance and have officially sacked their national coach!

“Egypt parted company with national team coach Hassan Shehata on Monday after a draw against South Africa sent the defending champions to the bottom of their African Nations Cup qualifying group.

Egypt have not won a match in their group and were all but eliminated from the competition after Sunday’s 0-0 draw.

Samir Zaher, head of the Egyptian federation, said in a statement that “the federation has full respect for the management team over the past six years in terms of accomplishments”.

Shehata led Egypt to the last three Nations Cup titles as well as bringing the team one of its highest Fifa rankings ever.”

In Tennis: Rolland Garros

I was backing Roger Federer on this one but Nadal proved just how good he is. Nadal struggled to get into the game at first and handed Federer the lead but he later regained his positio and defeated Federer. Despite my favourite player not winning it was a good final.

Rafael Nadal maintained first place in the men’s tennis rankings against charging Novak Djokovic, with some help of his friendly rival Roger Federer.

Spain’s Nadal retained the top ranking in Monday’s ATP list, the day after claiming a sixth French Open crown to equal the Roland Garros record of Bjorn Borg.

Nadal beat Federer for the title after the Swiss had handed Djokovic a first 2011 defeat in the semifinals. Djokovic would have moved to the top had he made the final, or if Federer had won the decider.

Nadal has 12 070 points for a slender 45-point advantage over the Serb Djokovic, who is on 12 025. Federer remains third, with 9 230 points.

ATP top 10 as of June 6 (previous ranking in parenthesis):

1. (1) Rafael Nadal, Spain, 12 070 points
2. (2) Novak Djokovic, Serbia, 12 025
3. (3) Roger Federer, Switzerland, 9 230
4. (4) Andy Murray, Britain, 6 625
5. (5) Robin Soderling, Sweden, 4 595
6. (7) David Ferrer, Spain, 4 150
7. (6) Tomas Berdych, Czech Republic, 3 490
8. (9) Gael Monfils, France, 2 780
9. (10) Mardy Fish, United States, 2 440
10. (11) Andy Roddick, United States, 2 200
