Barcelona and Real Madrid have had a bitter rivalry dating way back to 1902 and they are braced to face each other four times in an 18-day period that will define their respective seasons.”

Okay, so there’s a lot of football action taking place today but all eyes across the world will be on Barcelona (Messi) vs Real Madrid (Ronaldo). This is where we see arguably 2 of the world’s best players outplay and outclass each other. Although Barcelona’s Messi has been praised as the better player over Ronaldo, Real Madrid supporters still believe they have the winning charm.

I’m a Barca fan at heart so I guess you now know where I stand. Not only does he prove it on the field that he’s a great player but Messi’s numbers don’t lie either…

  • “Messi has scored 48 goals in all competitions so far this season, and his next match will be [tonight] against Ronaldo and his Real Madrid teammates. No Spanish league player has ever scored 50 goals in a season.”
  • “The 23-year-old Messi has scored 95 goals in his last 99 games and helped Barcelona to eight trophies over the past two seasons, which were both capped with world player of the year accolades.”

Meanwhile…

  • “Ronaldo, who has scored 39 goals in 47 games, has yet to score in six games against Barcelona, with one victory and four losses.

“Even England coach Fabio Capello appeared to select Messi over Ronaldo when asked on Thursday which of the two players he would pick if he could nationalize just one for his current team.

“Ronaldo knows English and (Messi) knows football,” Capello said.

“The arch rivals clash in three competitions: in La Liga [tonight], in the final of the King’s Cup next Wednesday and in the Champions League semifinals at Madrid’s home the Bernabeu on March 27 and at the Nou Camp on May 3.”

Thus far Barcelona have proven to be the better team, beating Real 5 consecutive times. “The last of those was a crushing 5-0 rout at the Nou Camp in November, which ended Jose Mourinho’s unbeaten start as Real coach.”

  • “Real have not beaten Barcelona since May 2008 when they won 4-1 in a league game at the Bernabeu when Barcelona famously had to do the painful guard of honour in recognition of Real’s title win.”
  • “Incredibly, Barcelona and Real have not met in the Cup final since 1990 when Barcelona won 2-0.”
  • “Barcelona are record 25 winners of the Kings Cup and won the competition as recently as 2009, while Madrid have an awful record in the domestic cup with their last triumph coming way back in 1993.”

However…

  • “historically, Real have been the more successful of the two, boasting nine European Cups to Barcelona’s three and 31 league titles to Barcelona’s 20.”

“The league encounter is followed by the Kings Cup final four days later on April 20 at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium as Mourinho looks to lift his first trophy as Madrid manager.”

As a fan of Barca I don’t underestimate Real’s ability of winning, which explains why I am super nervous for tonights game. But what I love most about the Spanish La Liga and in particular the “El Clasico”, is that you will never be disappointed by the quality of football played by both teams.
