Filed under : Africa, Politics

Hello lovely ones!

.

It has been reported that the West African country of Ivory Coast, incumbent President, Laurent Gbagbo, was captured after a week-long siege, according to news reports. Mr. Gbagbo was arrested by French forces on Monday April 11th afternoon in an operation where Ouattara forces, with the support of French forces, stormed Gbagbo’s residence and made the arrest.

And as events unfold in Ivory Coast, Monday, April 11th in history, the military dictator & former President of Uganda (1971 – 1979), Idi Amin Dada was ALSO deposed by exiled rebels who were backed by Tanzanian forces as the rebels seized control of the country. The number of people killed as a result of Idi Amin‘s regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000!

Amin later fled to exile in Libya and Saudi Arabia, where he died on 16th August 2003 at a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He was buried in Ruwais Cemetery in Jeddah.

Idi Amin Dada

Most of us know Forest Whitaker’s portrayal of Idi Amin, in the 2006 film, The Last King of Scotland, for which he won an Oscar Award. I have to watch it…side-bar

Well here is an interesting documentary by movie Director, Barbet Schroeder. Released in 1974, the documentary on Amin, titled, General Idi Amin Dada, at the height of Idi Amin’s power. Schroeder was given unprecedented access to the dictator…so think buffoonery meets madness & incomprehensible atrocities against human beings. smh

Viewer discretion is advised.

Says, David Ehrenstein over at Criterion Collection;

Like many a dictator he served as convenient ally for other world powers, depending on the specific situation, only to get thrust aside as a pariah when his services were no longer required. As Schroeder’s film shows, Amin is a product of both the colonized Africa into which he was born, and of the Israeli military in which he was given training (and which had supported his coup against Obote).
