South African singer Pebbles is back with a new album…it’s been a while.

Pebbles’ new album Phenomenal is overseen by production ensemble Jazzworks, and not only expands on her song-writing abilities, but even sees her dabble in some production for the first time, which she justifies as follows: “I think as an artist you always try to push yourself to do what you haven’t done before. Or at least you should.  I don’t play any music instruments so the next best thing for me was to make beats.”

“The overall result is a set that can be placed somewhere in between the sophistication of Anita Baker and the earnestness of Amy Winehouse, both of whom are influences as are Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra.”

In between these albums, Pebbles has spent time honing her ability by working on a range of high profile music projects.  Hers was one of the voices on Ke Nako used in the 2010 Fifa World Cup campaign and played during the opening ceremony for the games. She currently is the lead vocalist for the Joburg – based pop soul band, Newtown.

Working with SA’s music greats is actually something of a mainstay in Pebbles’ career by now. Tumi and the Volume’s 76 and People of the Light – from the seminal 2004 Live at the Bassline album – are considered classics not least because of Pebbles vocal contribution. Tumi, who wrote (The Way of Want on Playful soul), features Pebbles on his album Whole Worlds.
Phenomenal’s title track features appearances from long time collaborator Zubz (Destiny, All My Life), and R&B new comer Nothende.

Another familiar heavyweight listed in the album credits is RJ Benjamin, a maestro and a rare producer/artist in what is still a very niche music genre in South Africa. According to him, working with this PE and UK-raised singer was a no-brainer: “I happened to walk into a meeting at Jazzworks where pebbles was playing her new songs. When the question was asked about who would like to produce this music, I had no reservations in taking on her project. It remains one of my favourite albums to have ever produced.” Elsewhere on the album, RJ also co-writes Cry for Me and Should’ve Walked Away . Other producers on the album include Amu, Mizi, D’Mongz, Tebogo Moloto & Battlekat.

The album’s lead single  “Over” is enjoying increasing popularity on radio ta the moment. The single is available to hear online exclusively on Pebbles’ brand new Face Book fan page.
