Metro fm radio presenter Robert Marawa got an exclusive interview with South African footballer and soon to be former Orlando Pirates midfielder Teko Modise. Teko Modise was accompanied by his manger Jazzman Mahlakgane to the SABC radio park. The news of his departure from the football club that he has forever called home was received midday yesterday after weeks of speculation on Teko’s future as a footballer.

This interview highlighted many issues that were left in limbo and closed a chapter of Teko’s football career at one of the country’s biggest football clubs. As intimate as the interview was, Modise spoke openly about his feelings about his fans, the booing, his relationship with Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol and his decision to leave the club. As he say’s “the opportunity for me to leave Orlando Pirates presented itself and I took the decision to take the offer”.

However, Teko’s manager Jazzman stressed that Teko is still a free agent as he has not yet signed with Sundowns and this may make room for other local football clubs that may seek Modise’s signature.

Robert Marawa

These are some of the quotes I picked out from his interview with Robert Marawa on Metro FM:

When asked about the frequent allegations made in the media about him going awol, he had this to say: “allegations of me going awol make my mom sad because she hears these things from the neighbours and it makes her sad. She doesn’t understand how her son can be missing…it’s really sad, but I choose not to respond to them”.

“What’s important for me right now is to play football, that’s all I want to do”.

“If I have ever hurt anyone , I just wanna say I’m sorry”.

“Football is my life and I don’t know what I would do without it”.

“I want to be judged as a footballer ‘cause that’s what im known for…as a footballer”.

“Yes there was a point in my career where I lacked the passion for football and was not motivated to do what I loved but the hunger for football came back and I have a lot of support from so many people”.

“Sometimes people (fans) expect miracles from you and you feel the pressure because you don’t want to disappoint them”.

On his relationship with Orlando Pirates coach (the man believed to have ruined his career at Orlando Pirates): “My relationship with Ruud Krol is not the same as it used to be before. I respect him as a coach but it will never be the same again and im not going to complain about it”.

“My love for the team (Orlando Pirates) is unquestionable, I love Orlando Pirates”.

“At the end of the day, football is football…players come and go and so do coaches”.

“At the age that I’m at I need to play regularly. I’m not a youngster anymore”

Robert: How did you feel when you were booed for the first time by your own fans?

“ [pauses for a while…] I think I saw it coming but I didn’t know what to do at the time, it was a very hard time for me. I get hurt but I chose to play football so I just need to be strong and play football”.

This was the part of the interview where I had to grab a kleenex…

“I never thought that I would leave Orlando pirates for any local team! Me leaving Pirates was to go overseas”.

[Lowers voice, pauses] “I’m excited but at the same time I’m leaving a place that I once called home”.

His manager comes in…

“Teko was the darling of Orlando Pirates and this was a hard decision but one that I respect as his manager”.

“I’m not leaving Orlando Pirates just because I want to move or just to make headlines…it’s something that I feel I have to do for my career and I cannot sit back and fear the unknown”.

“This is my career, it’s not a hobby. It’s something I take very seriously”.

His last words: [Lowers voice, pauses for a while…] I’m very sorry, I know it hurts a lot of people but it’s something I have to do. I just hope that whoever supports Teko Modise will always support Teko Modise regardless of the colour of my jersey”.

Orlando Pirates Chairperson Dr. Irvin Khoza’s response via telephone:

“It’s sad to lose a player of Teko’s caliber especially after hunting him down before he was even on every billboard in the country”.

“We didn’t push Teko out of Pirates, this was his decision. Teko’s contract with us was until 2012 and had the option of extension”.

“Orlando Pirates did everything to support Teko. We wanted to know the problem and find as solution. We were willing to do whatever it took to help him”.

“We wish Teko all the best of luck”.

Well those are just some of the quotes I gathered from this interview…now we wait for the official announcement.

From your girl Allegro Dinkwanyane-“I’m just saying”, so have your say…

I thnk its rily a gud move for teko…A mean a team and its supporters make up a family nd if we dnt support each othr thn thers no problem with seeking for those who wld surport u.As fans, we r the ones tht make the team or players as individuals play well nd we show thm luv only wen they r at their best thn we going no whre.wat Orlando piratesfans did was unacceptable,as a player who did a lot for Pirates Modise deserved a lot more
