The 2nd annual Feather Awards were hosted this past Wednesday (10th November) at the Atlas Studio’s in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The red carpet affair sponsored by Chevrolet pulled out all the stops to make sure that the ceremony stayed at the tip of everyone’s tongues.

Co-host Somizi Mhlongo

Somizi Mhlongo aka “Madame Gigi” gave everyone something to talk about throughout the evening and his co-host Kenneth Nkosi “Mr. Funny man” tried to keep the audience in laughter. From his daring red glittering gown to his performances and direct jokes to present guests such as winner of the Drama King award Thenius Crous (who rose to fame via Khanyi Mbau).

Thenius and Primrose Crous…(arrived in a black Lambo)

The awards were attended by “the who’s who” of the entertainment industry, who looked forward to seeing what the Feathers could offer a second time around.

The red carpet was a sight worth seeing with gorgeous (and I emphasise…GORGEOUS) topless male models who escorted guests onto the red carpet. (The media couldn’t stop snapping and so could I, lol).

Sonia Sedibe

Actress Sonia Sedibe graced the awards with her presence, looking effortlessly radiant in a lime gown (she is one lovely pregnant woman).

David Tlale

South African renowned fashion designer David Tlale made a “fierce” entry with his brown and white ensemble.

OMG!!! Dineo Ranaka

Someone else who went for the daring (and rather shocking) look was YFM radio DJ Dineo Ranaka. Dineo decided to go with plastic because “I’m plastic like that! I couldn’t find a dress and I mean how many cocktail dresses are you gonna wear to events? So I just decided that the plastic would work”. There was almost a moment of silence and disbelief when she stepped onto the red carpet, wrapped in nothing but plastic. (All I can say here is…MOVE OVER Lady Gaga, Dineo is here!”

Dineo received the award for Fag Hag of the year (someone who hangs around a lot with his/her gay friends and loves it). Just as Gaga did at the 2010 VMAs, Dineo sang Gaga’s “we were born this way” during her acceptance speech! (BANG!!!)

Dineo Ranaka and hotness…lol

Actress Kagiso Rakosha (who along with Somizi, Sophie Ndaba and I was styled by stylist Lindani)

My favourite South African songbird Lira was also there, nominated and booked to perform. She looked dashing on the red carpet in a black dress and flawless make-up. (She is such a sweet heart and very humble J).

Khanyi Mbau (along with her bouncers) caused DRAMA at the awards when she got up on stage just before they announced the winner of the drama king of the year award. She obviously wanted to set the record straight about where she stands with “ex-lover” Thenius Crous who was there with his gorgeous wife Primrose Crous. Straight after she said what she had to say she strutted her stuff off the stage, sat down for a while and made an exit only to come back to the party later. After all Khanyi said Thenius Crous said this in his acceptance speech “I thank Khanyi for all the trouble she caused in my life” (eerrrr really???) “and to everyone else F* off” (Shocked was the word to explain a lot of the faces there).

Khanyi Mbau and her bouncers…

The drama kept everyone talking for a while but Lira managed to calm the crowd with her rendition of the late Brenda Fassie’s “Weekend Special”. Singer Buci, also paid tribute to another South African star Lebo Mathosa.

Lira accepting her award

I met up with Buci on the red carpet before her performance and asked her how she felt about her upcoming performance on the night…”wow, I’m nervous! I mean I don’t want to disappoint anyone and more especially I don’t want to mess up a great song by a great artist. I mean this is Lebo Mathosa we are talking about.”

Personally I applauded her performance, I thought she did very well (but of course no one can ever come as close as the late Lebo Mathosa herself in perfecting her own music.

Lira joined Somizi for a collaboration just before wrapping up the glitzy evening. (Entertainment at its best!)

Lira and Somizi

Over and above everything, the 2nd annual Feather Awards were a huge success and we cannot wait for the 3rd edition in 2011.

See for yourself…
