JUST IN: Essence Magazine Editor-In-Chief, ANGELA BURT MURRAY Steps Down!

Hi guys & dolls!

Well, this is a shocker….

With with Angela Burt-Murray, Editor-in-Chief of ESSENCE MAGAZINE at NYC Fashion Week

According to the New York Post,

Angela Burt-Murray is out as editor-in-chief of Essence Magazine, the Time Inc.-owned magazine for African American women, after five years at the helm.

She told staffers yesterday in a meeting that she is relocating to Atlanta with her family. She didn’t return a call for comment.

Sheryl Tucker, who took a buyout as an editor-at-large at Time Inc. in 2008, is being brought back to run the mag on an interim basis.

According to sources, the company quietly began preparing for the move a few weeks ago but wanted to proceed delicately to avoid re-igniting a controversy that flared this summer when Burt-Murray appointed a white woman to the key position of fashion director.

Burt-Murray’s decision to appoint Ellianna Placas to the fashion post incensed some readers.

No mention was made of the controversy in the official memo from Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief John Huey, in which he heaped praise on Burt-Murray for her contributions to the magazine. Huey said the company was “beginning our search for a new editor.”

The magazine has been enjoying a resurgence on the ad front this year. Through the November issue, it was up 16.5 percent in ad pages to 1,202, although the circulation picture was somewhat flat. Total circulation dropped 2.4 percent to 1,066,482.

….wow! Wishing Angela all the best in her phase of her career & life as she moves to Atlanta with her family! Have to admit that she took Essence Magazine to a higher level…
