Our most sincere condolences to Tata Nelson Mandela & the entire Mandela family. According to news reports, Nelson Mandela‘s 13-year-old great-granddaughter, Zenani Mandela, died in one-car crash coming from the World Cup concert (deets to follow as soon we know more). May she rest in peace. In as much as the 2010 FIFA World Cup is historic and very exciting, we urge everyone to celebrate & drink responsibly!

So you missed one of the most historic concerts in our lifetime….the inaugural 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off celebration concert. Well we got you….flicks & vids! Sit back & enjoy all that South Africa, heck Africa has to offer…

Alicia Keys was the headliner….

Peep her performance:

I cried when Alicia replaced the lyrics “New York” with “Jo’burg” in her song “Empire State of Mind“…& when she did a rendition of  the late iconic Brenda Fassie‘s song “Too Late For Mama” (she did not come close to the way MaBrrrrr hit the notes on that song but still a nice tribute to the South African legend)

Black Eyed Peas held it down with their high energy performances…

Shakira in an interesting outfit…

Her performance:

K’Naan! Totally loving all things K’Naan!!!

Vusi Mahlasela

Lira, loved her outfit. She performed with Bra Hugh Masekela & they did a Mirriam Makeba classic, “Pata Pata“. Love!

Angelique Kidjo

The Parlotones

….& of course Nobel Laureate, Bishop Desmond Tutu made an appearance (loved that he spoken in the multiple South African languages):

32 teams, 31 games, one month, Spain favored to win but….

Who is your fave team to win at the opening game, SOUTH AFRICA or MEXICO?

Holla back & let us know your thoughts….

Muah & ♥ ya for it!

Wow lady, if anyone missed the opening performance, they can get it right here! I didn't realize that was what Alicia Keys was doing with her song “New York” and I watched the opening ceremonies TWICE… so thanks for sharing that lil tid bit :-) It was an amazing opening ceremony and it's been an amazing time watching the World Cup. I'm still rooting for Nigeria & USA but overall I'm glad that South Africa got the VERY 1st World Cup goal on African soil… something to remember!!!
