FaraiToday goes to Art Basel Miami Beach!

This one is for our art lovers!

Our Special Contributor, Kou Moore attended Art Basel [pronounced Bah-zel], in Miami Florida! Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) is the premier destination for contemporary art and design in the United States.

This year ABMB began on December 3rd and ended on the 6th.  Every year collectors, gallerists, artists, curators and celebrities gather in Miami to see new art and design as well as celebrate and unwind.

This year, 2 African artists were in the main fair.  Kehinde Wiley, who is of Nigerian descent, showed two pieces-one photograph of a man reclining and an oil painting of Michael Jackson astride a horse.  Both were whimsical and thought provoking speaking to societal ideas about pop culture, sex and power.

Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu had a huge installation entitled Gold Lip that was beautiful and lively and provocative.

Also showing was Shepard Fairey who gained worldwide fame with his Obama Hope poster.

There were amazing photographs of a Rwandan child soldier by French photographer, Kamel Mennour.  The photos served as a jolt back into the realities that far too many people worldwide deal with on a day to day basis.

There was also lots of great art to see at the fringe fairs-New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) and Pulse.  In addition to all the fairs there were dinners, cocktails, parties, brunches as well as talks, performances and tours of art collections.  There were other satellite activities such as the opening of the new boutique by top shoe designer Christian Louboutin. For all the Loub fans, the boutique is located at 155 NE 40th Street in the Miami Design District…

The weather in Miami was a perfect balmy tropical weather with not too hot sun and cool breezes at night.

Celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Naomi Campbell and Rambo himself- Mr. Sylvester Stallone, who was exhibiting some of his artwork, were out in full force.

ABMB officially lasted only 4 days but there were lots of pre, during and post activities to keep those involved in the arts occupied.  All too quickly it was over but the artwork and the memories will last and soon it’ll be time for Art Basel Miami Beach 2010.
