Jennifer Hudson cast as Winnie Mandela; Janet Jackson’s full ABC interview, Oprah done in 2011 & 2010 World Cup updates!

Yebo guys & dolls,

World Cup 2010 fever is at an all time high and all roads lead to South Africa June 2010…

World Cup 2010 2

This photo is blazin’! Taken by photography genius based in South Africa, Rushay Booysen

I am by NO means a soccer aficionado but I do know that only 32 countries can compete for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. As the host country, South Africa automatically qualifies to compete. For the African region, the following countries have qualified…

1. Algeria

2. Cameroon

3. Côte d’Ivoire

4. Ghana

5. Nigeria

One word for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa…BANANAS!!

Jennifer Hudson

And in casting news, Jennifer Hudson has been cast to play the role of Winnie Mandela in a dramatic feature called “Winnie”.

Andre Pieterse, Darrell J. Roodt and Paul L. Johnson wrote the script based on the Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob’s biography entitled “Winnie Mandela: A Life”. This must-read book is an intimate biography of the enigmatic former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela.

According to Variety, production on the movie commences, May 30th, 2010 in the South African locations of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Transkei [where my “ouma” is from] and Robben Island, where the future president spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

“Winnie” will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, the veteran South African filmmaker whose 2006 film “Yesterday” was Africa’s Best Foreign Film nominee, and who also directed “Cry, The Beloved Country,” and “Sarafina!”

The movie is being made with South African and Canadian money, with Andre Pieterse producing it with Michael Mosca of Canada’s Equinoxe Films.

*sighing…I heart Jay Hud! But surely they could have found an actress in South Africa to play the role of Winnie. I do understand the economics behind casting decisions, but it is a let down to know that we cannot play in movies that depict our stories! Seriously…

Anyway, Janet Jackson recently sat down with Robin Roberts for an interview on ABC’s In The Spotlight. Here is the full interview which aired on Wednesday…

This was Janet’s first television interview since the death of her brother, Michael. She dishes about her break-up from Jermaine Dupree, why she addresses her dad by his first name, Joseph, Michael’s use of drugs, her failed marriages to James DeBarge & Rene Elizondo…

Her new music video, “Make Me” aired on ABC last night. Janet Jackson will also perform for the 2009 American Music Awards in Los Angeles, California on November, 22nd.

Say it ain’t so!

I think CNN broke the news. One of my BFF’s called me from Chicago to tell me about Oprah Winfrey’s big, big news…[she also wanted to see if I could get tickets to the show, since you know]… Now this is coming from a chic who has been to the Oprah show more times that I can count! I on the other hand, have only been on Ms. Winfrey’s show one time…ONE beautiful & memorable time!

I digress…point of this is that I am in disbelief that Oprah’s show will be coming to an end, September 2011.

According to CNN, Oprah Winfrey will announce on Friday’s [TODAY]”The Oprah Winfrey Show” that she will end her talk show, said a spokesman for Winfrey’s Harpo Productions. The show will end on September 9, 2011, as its 25th season draws to a close, according to a letter from Harpo Inc. that President Tim Bennett addressed to partners and obtained by CNN affiliate WLS-TV…

No disrespect CNN, but I gotta hear this from the Queen of daytime talk herself!

I am not that into sports but when it comes to big competitions, yes I am on!!!

The day Algeria won against Egypt was a big victory. Egyptians were not happy at all, because they always wish to play against Cameroon and finish them up as usual, lool. This was a big dream for then, sorry!!! I als laughed a lot during the Ireland vs France match,it was very fun…

I also had a chat with my Cameroonian brothers and they said they did not expect that Egypt will be disqualify so early, but here is an advantage in their favor. They believe that the 2010 World Cup will be theirs to prove to the world the truthfulness of the saying “Cameroon is Africa in miniature”, not only by the shape of the map, but on all fronts.

I would have, personally, love to see more african countries being qualified, but it is not that easy, either it is the players potential or the team management that speaks.

I am happy for Cameroon, Ghana, Cote d Ivoire, Algeria and Nigeria. I can tell, Algeria will be disqualify very quickly, loool, and I am looking forward Nigeria or Cote d Ivoire to win this cup. Do not forget, there is always a surprise in these games so anyone can win!!!

What a pleasure to see the Diaspora celebrate their culture in all prices! delighted to know that Winnie Madikizela Mandela will be brought to the big screen and will be immortalized through this film. It is one of the emblematic figures of the Black Continent and this is a great reward to her. Darrel Roodt has realized so many good movies so I am reassured that this film will be as successful as his previous ones.

I agree that they could have found actors on hand to play the role of Winnie Mandela but they prefer Jennifer Husdon. Well, she is also goo, I loved her in ‘Dream girls’ next to Beyonce, Eddie Murphy, Jaimie Foxx…

What I strongly applause is the idea in itself and that they choose South Africa for the shooting to be done appropriately in those real areas to track everything that she endures all the way.

Farai, I’d like to know who will play the role of Nelson Madiba Mandela in the film? I heard rumors, without doubt, that this play could be given to the talented Morgan Freeman. Is it true?

    Loool Farai.

If Oprah puts an end to her show, what will happen to OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network)?

No , I Hope this is nor true. In any case, she just needs to rest if she is tired but not end the show. ;(

    Hi Venicia,

It’s official, Venicia is our Sports Editor! LOL!!

Girl, you definitely know more about soccer than I do! I am also very excited that Africa is hosting it and pray that an African nations wins the cup…I hear the World Cup fever is at an all time high there!!!

Enjoy & look forward to your soccer commentaries!

Ahahahaha I am dead laughing on your reply and my previous comment, oh God I was so inspired this morning!!! Thanks Boss, I will take the job offer !!!

Well, the 2010 South African jersey has been launched weeks ago,,,We are definitely ready for the World Cup and accomodate all these nations. Johannesburg gets a new look every day and is preparing to offer everyone the best of itself.
The Ellis Park stadium, for example, which will host the opening games is tremendeously beautiful. I even took pictures the last time I passed by…The site is near the end but I can already attest that the celebration will be beautiful.

Everyone is happy: children, youngsters, oldies…Good news for students is that school will start early for everyone to finish writing exams before June 2010. Many of us, students, think that this is wise because it would have been a disaster if universities will still be open at that period & expect students to do well during their exams. At this point, some students are making fun of the employees who will be working all day long and not enjoy the games. Want it or not, they will be rewarded y their bosses.

It’s all good here and wish everything goes well, inch’allah!

    Hi Venicia,

I too am very excited about the movie on Winnie Mandela’s life! I think that Winne has lived a fascinating life that at times has been misunderstood by people. I have not had the chance to read the actual book which the movie is based on but I think Darrell J. Roodt will do an amazing job since he has directed some great movies in Cry, The Beloved Country and Sarafina!

My only contention is that as amazing and awesome an actress Jeniffer Hudson is, I only wish they would have give South African actresses a chance to try out for the role! Leleti Khumalo comes to mind…I am sure they are plenty who could have played the powerful and complex role of Winnie Mandela.

It would have given much exposure and credibility to our acting abilities. Also the story is a South African one…Years down, will a South African play the role of First Lady Michelle Obama?

Please don’t get me wrong, I am super excited that the story of Winnie is finally being told. It needs to be! Winnie was very instrumental in the struggle against apartheid. She remains an inspiration to many young African women….

    Hi Venicia,

Well Oprah has been doing her show for the past 24 years and I think she is ready for her next challenge and assignment in life!

The Oprah Winfrey Network OWN will allow her to develop programs at are close to her heart and that deal with the issues she talks about on her show. So the OWN channel is an expansion of her platform, so for just a one hour show, she will be able to provide 24hrs of programming of topics that are close to her heart and that should hopefully resonate with her audience….

So it is true that on daytime, Oprah show will end in 2011 but that is when she will launch a 24hr network, OWN and she might continue the Oprah show there or not…either way Oprah is NOT leaving the business of media and television!!!

Oh okay, that’s cool though. Thanks for sending me some light down here, really appreciated it. :))
