President Barack Obama wins the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize!

How cool is this? For your Press Secretary [work with me on this coz I am going somewhere with this] to wake you up just before 6:00 a.m. and tell you that you had won the Nobel Peace Prize! That is exactly what White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs did this morning with our very own President Barack Obama! He won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize!

Days before the announcement, speculation on a potential winner had been focused on a wide variety of candidates besides President Obama. Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai was a very strong contender, a Colombian senator, a Chinese dissident and an Afghan woman’s rights activist, among others.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe

As you know Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been a key political figure working tirelessly to bring about CHANGE in Zimbabwe.

Obama is the third sitting U.S. president to win the award: President Theodore Roosevelt won in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919.

As SABC Radio 2000‘s Kenny said this morning during my entertainment update, President Barack Obama joins also South Africa’s beloved former President Nelson Mandela, Frederick de Klerk and Bishop Desmond Tutu, all Nobel Peace Prize laureates!

Kudos to President Barack…he is an inspiration! He brings hope & is a shining example of the CHANGE we need!
