Oprah Say You Are One Of Them

Our fave talkshow chic just released her new book club pick & it is written by an African from Nigeria, Jesuit Priest & author, Uwem Akpan. And boy are we geeked!!!

Media mogul herself, Oprah picked Father Akpan’s Say You’re One Of Them as her 63rd book club selection. This is the first time Oprah has chosen a book of short stories. Said Oprah about Father Akpan’s book, it “left me stunned and profoundly moved.”

The book of collection, published in 2008, includes five separate stories from the perspective of an African child that were described as capturing the resilience of children growing up in the face of unimaginable devastation. Some of the African countries featured in the book include, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Gabon, Rwanda, Kenya, & Ethiopia

A bit on the author: Father Akpan studied philosophy and English at Creighton and Gonzaga universities then studied theology for three years at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

He was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 2003 and received his master’s degree in creative writing from the University of Michigan in 2006. In 2007, Akpan taught at a Jesuit college in Harare, Zimbabwe. Now, he serves at Christ the King Church, Ilasamaja-Lagos, Nigeria

Father Akpan said that he was “very, very humbled” to be chosen by Oprah…aawww! Loves this!
