Deborah Cox Interview2

At the new 42North Restaurant inside the Renaissance Marriott, Detroit MI

So we  sat down with one of our fave girls, award-winning singer, Deborah Cox at the just ended, BET Foundation Women’s Health Symposium in Detroit, MI. This is the side of BET we often do not get to see. Community initiatives, health drives that target women & girls of color, fitness & lifestyle education all provided in a fun & friendly environment at a city near you! I loved what Deborah had to share because she is constantly on the go with her music, touring, acting in Broadway plays, being mommy to three little ones and wife (phew!). She shared that she finds time to meditate and get centered, and is conscientious about her food choices (especially if she in touring or on the road). Certainly genetics do help, coz girlfriend is fab!

This was the first time that the BET Foundation brought the Women’s Health Symposium to Detroit. And a very successful event it was! Deborah Cox, BET Foundation folks & partners, Ken Cockerel, City of Detroit Council President were there to rock the VIP Reception to kick start the symposium! This invite-only reception was held at the Renaissance Marriott Hotel. Gotta say hey to Lisa Williams, Director of Sales for Marriott for her awesome southern hospitality! Thanks girl!

BET WomensSymposium(1)

Today was the actual symposium which composed of health & lifestyle education tailored to assist African American women.  There was food & beverages, music, & experts covering health topics such as obesity, nutrition, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, breast and cervical cancer, depression and mental health and overall fitness in a fun & relaxed atmosphere. BET Foundation’s Executive Director, Sonya Lockett said that they partnered with local health experts for the symposium because the experts were already familiar with their communities. Makes total sense!

Award winning Gospel artist, Vickie Winans provided so much comic relief as the MC of the event and later on, participants were treated to a performance by Deborah Cox. Also chatted with the one of the panelists, Carole Gist Stramler, the first African American to win the Miss USA title. Carole is a fitness expert & conducts Be Fit Boot Camps. She told us that she is working on a new project, a fitness DVD! Go girl!

It was great weather & fun times. Kudos Sonya, Debra, & your BET Foundation team & partners!

So make sure you check out The Bet Foundation health event when they come to your city. Next stop for the tour is Jackson, Mississippi October 31st!
